Web Design, Computer Programming, Trumpet Performance

Mary Heath, a native of Charleston, West

Virginia, is current a trumpet performance and

computer science student at Marshall

University. She is a transfer student from the

University of Kentucky. Heath is a member of

Delta Omicron (International Professional

Music Fraternity), Tau Beta Sigma (Honorary

Band Service Sorority), Phi Eta Sigma National

Freshmen Honor Society Inc., National Society

of Collegiate Scholars, Campus Crusade for

Christ, as well as a Donald B. Harper Fine

Arts Scholar (2008-2009), Musical Arts Guild

Scholarship (2008-2009), and the Stewart

Smith Scholarship Recipient for the Depart-

ment of Music (2009-2010) at Marshall.

In May and June 2009, Heath got the opportunity to travel to La Plata, Argentina for 6 weeks with Campus Crusade for Christ.  She had a life changing experience there and met many awesome Argentine students who she cannot wait to see again someday!  The trip challenged her in her love of Christ, her Spanish speaking skills, as well as emotionally as she left the country for six weeks and had to raise over $5,000 in only a month and a half.  However, the more she was challenged, the more she relied upon the Lord for strength and God always provided.

As a musician, Mary began playing trumpet at age 12 and has studied under Jeff Flanagan of Charleston, Mark Clodfelter of the University of Kentucky, and Martin Saunders of Marshall University. As a member of the WV Youth Orchestra she had the opportunity to perform as soloist when she was the 2006 Concerto Competition Winner as well as travel on a European Tour of Italy in Austria in Summer 2006. During her time as a student at UK, she had the opportunity to travel to Kalavrita, Greece for the 2007 Exploring Brass in Greece Festival.

Heath is a proud participant in the WV Governor's Internship Program, sponsored by Governor and First Lady Joe Manchin. In Summer 2008, she worked with the WV Division of Personnel to redesign their intranet, write a Java-based Backpay Program and Tenure Calculator, Job Listing Search for summer career fairs, as well as help employees with the transition to a new server. In December 2008 she returned to her internship and began re-working the Job Listing Search engine to be Database based.

Heath is now an intern for the WV Division of Personnel, working in the Payroll section.  In summer 2009 she did a database merging and conversion from Department of Health and Human Resources to the Division of Personnel, using Microsoft Access.  Furthermore, she created an electronic WV-11 to be implemented in the County Health System using Visual Basic in Microsoft Excel.  Finally, Heath is working on an online database system for County Health Agencies to track employees and their transactions via the internet so that all Departments may have access to their employees.  Furthermore, the system will allow users to electronically submit and track WV-11s throughout the approval process.

As a computer programmer, she designed her first software product last year - The Music Librarian. The Music Librarian program categorizes sheet music based on skill, composer, title, arranger, etc. and tells you the location in your personal library to avoid wasting precious time in student lessons searching for the right piece of music.

As a web programmer, she is currently the webmaster for two different sites: Delta Omicron Delta Kappa Chapter and Elizabeth Memorial United Methodist Church. Furthermore, she was the first ever three year member of her high school's webteam at George Washington High School in Charleston.

Prior to college, Heath was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at George Washington High School, president of her church youth group, and a 13-year member of the Girl Scouts of America.  Heath earned both her silver and gold awards through Girl Scouts.  For her Gold Award Project, she and the members of her troop hosted a day long Art and Music Education Awareness Fair to raise money for Art Programs at Local Elementary Schools.
